Sebastian Ingrosso: Biography.

If you’ve ever been to Stockholm, you’ll know that quality is key. It infiltrates absolutely everything from food to flirting, and in the creative arts especially, and in Sebastian Carmine Ingrosso’s case…..music! You’ll also more than likely have had some contact with the “Ingrosso” family! Let’s just say that this notorious family who originally descended from Italy, have a considerable presence in Stockholm!

Rewind though, and you’ll find a young Sebastian growing up in the ghetto with a certain young Steve Angello. Best buddies through thick and thin from WAY back, these boys looked to music for their distraction and ultimately discovered where their talents lay, and shortly afterwards their passion followed. Hip-hop, movie soundtracks, funk & soul, techno, lounge, everything!

So welcome to Sebastian’s world: Streetwise. Energetic. Charming. And utterly dedicated to rocking the party.

Seb’s first ventures into the studio were at his father’s place in the mid-90s and it was only a few years before the mighty “Freshly Squeezed” in May 2001, and “Echo Vibes” in October 2002 were released. These early and promising EPs were created with Steve Angello and released on Joia Records, which is another Ingrosso family venture. Drawing heavily on influences such as Daft Punk’s “Homework LP”, and other artists such as Todd Terry, Dj Sneak and Carl Craig, Sebastian was finding new flavour and looking up to artists who would soon become his piers in the DJ fraternity, something which Sebastian will never forget. After “Echo Vibes”, turned into a hit, the record was remixed by his successful Swedish counterpart Eric Prydz, and the two have been close ever since. In fact today Sebastian, Steve Angello, Eric Prydz and Axwell are known collectively as the Swedish House Mafia – a familiar name in the dance music industry. They are now a successful mesh of friends & workmates and their different levels of relationships gel together perfectly.

From there Sebastian worked solidly on producing music – his passion. And as he worked, his distinctive sound evolved and was fine-tuned. Pushing boundaries on a regular basis soon caught the attention of the industry’s heavy hitters. After Sebastian released “Get It Back”, “Shake” and “Yo Yo Kidz” in 2004 on his own label Refune, he only got better. With a string of innovative house music productions, the worlds dance music community had now officially discovered his talent. Now for Sebastian having his own label is something that excites him, after all he gets to present his talent and hard work:

===
Q*You launched your own label a few years ago, ‘Refune Records’, what was your main goal with the creation of this label?
A* to do exactly what I want with it!
===

Although Sebastian still puts out tracks and remixes for the cream of the world’s dance community, he is dedicated to turning his own label Refune Records into a household name in the industry. Even though only in its early stages it seems the label’s 5th release ‘Same Man’ will be the record to put it on the map. So now as his project starts to take flight, look for a solid 2006 from Sebastian Ingrosso and Refune Records.

As an early producer Sebastian learnt that spinning records was just as fun. He & ‘partner in crime’ Steve Angello skipped school to go to clubs, and later, put on the best underground parties in their home town; the pair soon developed a taste for entertaining the passionate dance music community in Stockholm with their raw feel for the music. The opportunity for these kids to perform in front of a crowd was what sealed the deal…they practiced, shopped for records and studied their idols. Sebastian’s passion for the scene and music drove and consumed him and while he worked hard in the studio, he continued to build his name as a great DJ throughout Sweden. Even better, he started making it pay too, staggering considering he was only 17. Since then he has been making crowds go wild from Johannesburg to Jakarta. Sebastian then started building his international DJ career, and fast. In 2005 he made his mark at Pacha Ibiza alongside Erick Morillo at the legendary Subliminal Sessions party. He played club sets (New York’s award winning Cielo) and headlined large events (Miami’s BANG! Music Festival, and KISS FM’s yearly celebration in Kiev). His sets worldwide made people stand up and take notice. Humble Sebastian felt these were huge accomplishments but has since set his sights even higher. Early 2006 has already seen him playing the famous Ministry of Sound in London and Paris’s hottest new club, The Mix. And more featured sets are to come at the Global Gathering, Coloursfest and Creamfields Festivals. Plus as his production & remixes continue to bleed out to the masses, plans are set for him to visit USA South America & Canada, Australia & Asia and to the farthest corners of Europe.

His link with Subliminal in 2005 also had him producing the “Subliminal Sessions 8” compilation CD in summer 2005 with Steve Angello. Reviews for their mix were great. An explosive and innovative sound was showcased and the dance music world took notice:

===
“Just when I thought it couldn't get any better, Angello and Ingrosso drop a bomb mixing some acid, progressive, and techy tunes demanding some of my attention toward the volume knob. Many of the tunes on this side have been progressed by the likes of house music's biggest over the past few months. Songs like Cirez D's "Teaser" and Tony Senghore's "Peace" (Ingrosso Mix) set the stage for a well-formed album and excellent transaction from tune to tune. Listening to this you can’t help but wonder what these guys will come up with next! If you’re into the gritty deep dirty filthy dark house stuff then this one’s for you as these guys throw it down mashing 12 soon to be classics into one perfectly arranged album. An essential piece to any collection”
===

After that Mixmag put Steve & Sebastian’s next mix on the cover of their September issue, which fans voted their favourite of the 2005. This was another great accomplishment for Sebastian, it showed the fans understood and appreciated his talents as the mix featured mostly records he produced or remixed. Soon after that the most powerful man in dance music came knocking. Pete Tong not only raved about Sebastian’s talent and “golden touch” when it came to making records, he invited Sebastian & his partner Steve Angello to do an Essential Mix for UK’s famed Radio 1 station. That too won the fans over! And to top off the year, another big honour (and probably closest to his heart) was Sweden’s popular main-stream radio station P3 named him “Dance Music Artist of the Year”, a title previously won by his “Swedish House Mafia” counterpart, Eric Prydz.

Some of the most successful club records you heard in 2004 & 2005 hailed from Sebastian’s studio in wintery Stockholm. Under the production moniker “Buy Now”, he & Steve Angello brought us the dance floor slammer “For Sale”. The club hits “Together”, “Yeah”, “Instrumental” and “82-83” were also from Sebastian. Plus he might as well have his name next to the word “remix” in the dictionary as he’s developed a very credible name for delivering distinctive and rocking remixes in the dance music industry. His most recent and successful remixes include tracks for Moby, Royksopp and Deep Dish. And you’ll be glad to hear that he has been dedicating more of his precious time to studio work. Sebastian says he has two main focuses. The first is developing the musical direction and working on key tracks for Refune Records’ 2006 catalogue, and second is the much-anticipated album for his ‘Buy Now’ alias. An artist album is a first for Sebastian and no doubt he’ll to step up to the challenge. With multiple projects on the way, there’s definitely alot to stay tuned for from Sebastian Ingrosso…passionate, smart, independent, talented and right in your face! You’ll be hearing a lot more from this exceptional young man.

Axwell: Biography.

There is so much great house music coming out of Sweden at the moment and right at the forefront of it is Axwell. This young Swedish producer needs no introduction to the house crowd after delivering a string of very successful records over the last couple of years. These include the 3 massive Mambana tracks on Soulfuric, Jetlag "So Right" (Soulfuric) and of course 2 of his solo releases thus far "Lead Guitar" (Stoney Boy) & "Wait A Minute" feat Nevada (Device).

Axwell's latest solo offering is arguably his biggest record to date. "Feel The Vibe" has all the hallmarks of an Axwell track the tight production, the funky bassline and most of all that "Feel Good Vibe". The track was released on Swedish label Nero Recordings at the end of last summer and soon picked up support from a host of big name DJ's including Roger Sanchez, Judge Jules and Pete Tong. A new full vocal version has recently been completed and renamed "(Can You) Feel the Vibe" and a video is currently being shot in preparation for a full single release across the globe in the next couple of months.

Axwell has also lent his considerable talents to other artists by crafting remixes for the likes of Usher "Burn" (BMG) & Room 5 "Make Luv" (Positiva) - both UK #1 Records - Clipse ft Faith Evans "Ma, I Dont Love

Her" (RCA), N*E*R*D "Maybe" (Virgin), Stonebridge "Put 'Em High" (Hed Kandi) & Soulsearcher "Feelin Love" (Soulfuric).

The next few months promise even more gems from our favourite Scandinavian he's just finished a remix for Sabor's "Coracao" (Nero Recordings) and is currently working on a remix for Roger Sanchez's new track "Turn Up The Music" (Stealth). Other recent mixes have included C-Mos "2 Million Ways" (Manifesto), Rasmus Faber "Get Over Here" (Farplane), DJ Flex "Love For You" (Nereo) & Average White Band "Lets Go Round Again" (JVC).

On the production front Axwell has just completed the first release for his new label Axtone Records - the collaboration with fellow swede Sebastian Ingrosso is aptly title "Together" and has already received support from Pete Tong, Eric Prydz and Steve Angello. Out on Axtone in May. The second release for the label is called "The Guitar Track" and features the fantastic vocals of the UK's Steve Edwards, driving latin beats and an insatiable flamenco guitar lick - Summer anthem alert!

Steve Angello: Biography.

As a small boy Steve was introduced to the wonders and delights of the Athen's club culture and underworld in which his father moved. Deeply enthused by all of this and, as it emerged, incredibly talented, Steve quickly honed his turntablism skills, fusing hip-hop, breakbeats and 70's classics until he won himself his first club residency in Stockholm. Under-age (16) and out way past his bedtime, Steve was earning a not-so-honest crust to support his family alone. Whatever, he was seriously rocking that club week in week out!

Steve's first ventures into the studio were with best buddy Sebastian, at Seb's father's place but it was a further three years before the mighty "Freshly Squeezed" and "Echo Vibes" were created and released on Joia Records, Drawing heavily on influences such as Daft Punk's "Homework LP", Steve was finding new favour with the house music fraternity. Indeed "Echo Vibes", something of a hit at the time, was remixed by Eric Prydz, with whom Steve has remained close ever since. Today Steve, Sebastian , Eric and Axwell are known collectively as the Swedish House Mafia â?? a name to watch out for!

And so to Size Records: Steve's baby; the epitome of everything that Steve stands for; the outlet for Steve's voluminous work; and the vehicle for Steve's determination and ambition. Conceived in 2002 and operational by 2003, Size Records has truly taken the world by storm. Garnering support from house music's biggest superstars (Erick Morillo @ Ibiza, DJ Dero @ South America, Danny Tenaglia @ USA, Juan Bailey @ Mexico, Dave Armstrong @ Europe), the label has got off to a rollicking start. and remix requests from just about everybody. And to date, the label is just seven releases deep.

Steve Angello is an inspiration. He is a remarkable talent and a consummate professional. His music is borne of real life and real passion. This is just the beginning for Steve, he has just turned 21 years of age. He knows where he's going, and he'll certainly get there...

Steve Angello: Interview 2

Steve Angello`s one busy man. A rising star and dubbed to be the next big thing, it`s hard to believe that this DJ, producer and remixer is yet only 22. Trying to interview him is no easy feat. 4clubber`s Zakiyah Alhabshi realises this at his gig in Singapore, where he headlines a Subliminal party for the soft opening of new club DXO.

First, she has to sit through his bowl of spicy laksa and then, jump into a cab with him (where the interview eventually takes place) en route to the airport where he`s flying to play at club Yellow in Tokyo. An outspoken guy, who, unlike most DJs interviewed, thinks vinyl will make a comeback once MP3 gets too big; Steve also firmly brushes off any nonsense about dance music dying. He points out that some tunes (Eric Prydz`s Call On Me and Shapeshifter`s Lola`s Theme) have crossed over to the commercial charts.

Acknowledging that trends tend to go up and down, he predicts that dance music will be huge in one to two years` time. And this stalwart, who believes Europe to be the epic centre of the industry where new hits and sounds come out first, admits he`ll probably be a designer had he not gotten into DJing.

How did you start DJing?

I started DJing when I was around 12. I began playing Hip Hop, Breaks and got into the whole scratch thing. Then at 15, I got into dance music. At first I was playing techy stuff, then techno and finally house. Now it`s a mixture of everything.

Which is?

Well, I don`t really like to be put into one category. I tend to play techy, really funky, dirty and filthy house. I`m pretty flexible; I can go from a techy track to an old school classic. I can also go melodic and tribal and whack out some serious techno. That`s the kind of stuff people respect. Also, a DJ`s career has more potential if he`s flexible.

When was your first big break?

When I was 15, in Stockholm. I had to lie about my age to get that residency!

So how did you manage to become one of the Subliminal DJs?

I did a release late 2004, `Acid`, on Subliminal. They`re curious to see if I can also DJ. We`ve been doing some parties for a while by then and they`ve heard about us and wanted Sebastian (Ingrosso) and me on board. They asked us to do the latest Subliminal mix and we did the mix, together with Jose (Nunez), and now we`re part of Subliminal and playing everywhere.

You`re pretty involved in pushing the dance scene back in Stockholm. What`s it like over there, music wise?steve angello subliminal

The scene`s quite boring. It`s very much Pop, R & B and Hip Hop. So, Eric (Prydz), Sebastian and I pool our resources and contacts to promote dance music. Swedish people don`t want to pay to see Swedish DJs, so what we do is get people over to make appearances. When I play there, I rather play for free rather than get a small fee.

You have a new EP out under label `Who`s Who. Tell us more about it.

`Who`s Who` is actually me. It has a more electronic edge. Sometimes you want to do some different stuff from your original production so it`s easier to start a new name and push new sounds under that label. I don`t want to be one of those DJs who are only stuck into one sound and they do that for five years and after that, the sound`s not popular anymore and they`ll have a difficult time to change sound. To have a longer career, DJs have to be open minded and have a wide range of music.

Speaking of electronic, electro seems to be the current sound, influencing many tunes these days. What`s your view on that?

Well, look at Alter Ego for example, their productions were massive hits. I think the next step now is to make those type of tracks, but have different arrangements; play around and make them more housey, or add some vocals, like Green Velvet did. He mixed in vocals with electro. Really cool.

What else have you been up to, aside from jet setting around the world and releasing an EP?

SA: Well, I`ve just remixed the new Roman Flugel single which is a hit in Europe and also Moby`s `Raining Again`. I just can`t stop working. I don`t take a break after releasing a track or a remix. I`m back in the studio the next day. Sometimes I`m even working on long flights, thanks to my Mac laptop! So I`m able to work on ideas even when I`m flying. When I get home, I finish what I`ve started. So technology has certainly helped. I did the Moby remix while I was on the Canadian tour.

When do you have time to have a proper life?

It`s not easy. I`m playing at gigs on average three times a week, so I`m all over the place!

Did you have a good time at the recent WMC?

Yes, I did. I did Space – amazing crowd.

How was it playing Singapore last night?

Well, I had fun. I was drunk so it was good!

At such a young age, you`ve achieved more than almost anyone. Where do you see yourself at 25?

Oh my God. I don`t know….. Steve for president maybe? Well, I`d probably like to have a kid.
